Weekly Craft Activity- Yayoi Kusama

Before social distancing came about, I went to the Institute of Contemporary Art to visit one of my favorite artist's exhibition, Love is Calling. Love is calling has a series of tentacle-looking objects installed from below and above in a mirrored box. As you enter in, the Japanese artist recites a poem of hers through invisible speakers on repeat creating an immersive experience. Below is a photo I took during my visit and this week, YOU WILL BE CREATING YOUR OWN KUSAMA TENTACLES!

These self-made tentacles can form into whatever you want. There are only a few easy steps to follow. Here is an example of what a home-made tentacles and look like.

Here goes the steps:

  1. Grab some regular paper- whatever color you wish! (at least 2 sheets)

  2. Grab some of your favorite coloring supplies

  3. Grab some scissors

  4. Draw a flame-like shape like the one pictured on the right! (on both papers)

  5. Cut a straight line in the middle of your shape- one of them will have a slit at the top of the flame-like shape and the other will have a slit at the bottom like the one pictures here

  6. Cut out the shape

  7. Assemble! (This means putting the slits together to make one shape)

This is how it will look once assembled:

Now it's the fun part! Make it your own! You can think about:

WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU LOVE?
wHAT IS SOMETHING YOU FEAR?
WHAT IS SOMETHING THAT BRINGS YOU JOY?

Please do this project and leave a photo of your finished masterpiece below! I want to see them!!!! I will feature my faves on this post<3.
